In my never-ending quest to learn how to write a script, there has been one piece of advice that seems to be fairly consistent throughout the industry, schools, and professionals who actually do it for a living;
Read scripts.
Read as many scripts as you can.

You can scour the Internet and find PDFs of almost any category or genre of script that you want to read however, you’ll want to use a reliable source for these PDFs. Hopefully, I’m not overstating the obvious here.

For one thing, you want to make sure that whatever you’re downloading is legal. Scripts are copy-written properties. I’m not sure why some studios or writers allow their scripts to become accessible to the public and some don’t.

You also want to make sure you are reading the real thing. When I first started searching for scripts, I didn’t know the difference between a spec and a shooting script. I also didn’t know that there are a lot of people out there with a lot of time on their hands who transcribe movies. These transcriptions are also placed “into the wild” as actual screenplays.

Yeah, yeah…. I can hear your smirk all the way over here. It’s true; I actually read transcriptions on more than one occasion, thinking it was a script. Keep in mind, you probably know a lot more than I did when I first started learning about screenplays.

I’ve also seen a few “altered” scripts. And by altered, I don’t mean drafts from writers and studios. Someone decided to put their own elements in there.
